HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Huntsville City Council is scheduled to vote on the FY 2026 budget during Thursday's meeting.

If passed, the budget will be the city's largest. As Huntsville has grown, the operating budget has steadily increased. City leaders said the budget prioritizes spending in areas needed to keep up with an expanding city.

The Huntsville Police and Fire Departments will receive large chunks of the budget. Huntsville Police accounts for 26%, amounting to more than $80 million. The fire department is receiving 21% of the budget, equivalent to $65.5 million.

HPD is expected to hire 10 new employees, something spokesperson Chris Jackson said will benefit the department.
