(CNN) - The Food and Drug Administration will review evidence about the safety and efficacy of the abortion drug Mifepristone.
The FDA will also investigate how the drug can be safely dispensed.
The Trump Administration characterized the move as an effort to protect women’s health.
But abortion rights advocates worry it may foreshadow new federal limits on access to medication abortion.
Clinical studies and decades of use have established mifepristone’s safety and effectiveness.
According to the FDA, since its approval in the U.S. in 2000, there have been five deaths associated with Mifepristone for every one million people who used it.
That puts its safety on par with common over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen.
