MOSS POINT, Miss. (WLOX) - Moss Point Police Department is in a staffing crisis as multiple officers and detectives jump ship with the chief of police’s own departure announcement.
Chief Brandon Ashley sent his resignation letter to Mayor Billy Knight on Wednesday night. As of Thursday, two officers and three detectives are also leaving the department.
The City of Moss Point is budgeted for 18 officers and six detectives. After this exodus, it will be left with just eight officers and one detective on active payroll. That’s less than half the number of officers that Moss Point had in 2022 when Chief Ashley sounded the alarm on a staffing crisis.
