WEDDINGTON, N.C. — A 13-year-old student was charged after making a false 911 report claiming there was a shooting at Weddington Middle School, prompting a swift law enforcement response and campus lockdown, authorities said.

Union County 911 received the call around 3 p.m. from a cell phone located within the school, reporting that a student had been shot on campus. The school's resource officer was already on site when the call came in, and additional Union County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived within four minutes to secure the building.

Authorities conducted a thorough search of the campus but found no weapons and determined no shooting had occurred. The investigation quickly identified the 13-year-old student as the source of the false report.
