CHICAGO — The Mets earned a wild-card berth last season and reached the NLCS in part because of the front office’s strong performance before the trade deadline.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns landed Jesse Winker, Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton, Huascar Brazobán and Paul Blackburn to bolster the roster for the 2024 stretch run.

Winker, Stanek and Maton were particularly valuable in helping reinvigorate the club.

The script has played out differently this season. Stearns added four players before the trade deadline, and two have been colossal disappointments.
