Wilmington Police Mourn Loss of Comfort Dog Zena After Tragic Crash

The Wilmington Police Department in Massachusetts is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Zena, its 3-year-old comfort dog, after a head-on collision in Tewksbury claimed her life. Zena, a Bernedoodle who joined the department in 2022 as a puppy, had become a trusted source of compassion and comfort for countless residents.

The crash happened Tuesday morning when another driver allegedly crossed the double yellow line and struck a Toyota Camry driven by Wilmington Police Department Clinician Samantha Cavanaugh, Zena’s handler. Cavanaugh was injured and taken to a local hospital, while Zena was rushed to an animal hospital under Nero’s Law , which allows for traumatically injured police dogs to be transported by ambulance
