Wilmington officials are considering steps to bring more accuracy to property reassessments, after a summer of discontent over higher property taxes.

Mayor John Carney Thursday proposed to have a third-party, non-governmental organization come in to do a sampling of interior assessments in neighborhoods where assessments went up - although many of those neighborhoods were predominantly lower income.

Such interior inspections were lacking when Tyler Technologies conducted property reassessments throughout New Castle County.

Already this year, for the Fiscal Year 2026 budget, the city bifurcated residential and commercial rates and expanded the property tax exemption for seniors and disabled citizens.
