California’s redistricting fight is now in federal court as Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton sues to block Proposition 50. The measure would set aside maps from the state’s independent redistricting commission and temporarily adopt new districts expected to shift five U.S. House seats from Republicans to Democrats. Democrats say Prop 50 responds to Texas redistricting moves that created five Republican seats for 2026. Hilton argues the measure violates the 14th Amendment’s “one person, one vote” principle and is seeking an injunction before ballots are mailed.
