GREENVILLE, S.C. —
Data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act shows the number of South Carolina children facing felony convictions for weapons charges is lower than peak numbers previously recorded in the years following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice reported 532 total weapons class charges as of Aug. 6. In 2023, the numbers were 1,141. In 2019, there were 607 total recorded charges
