DONNELLSON, Iowa (WGEM) - A southeast Iowa writer turned filmmaker is beginning to rack up awards.
Beth Howard’s documentary “Pieowa: A Piece of America” recently won the Best Audience for Feature Documentary at California’s Silicon Beach Film Festival.
Howard lives on a farm outside Donnellson, Iowa, and said the film is about the therapeutic healing of pie.
She said after her husband died in 2009, pies helped her grieve and she has seen the power of pie do even more.
“Pie just lifts people’s spirits, it’s comfort food, it’s an act of love basically and you know, you show up for others and that is a very healing thing when you share a pie with someone,” said Howard. “Pies are very common at funerals, right?
