Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg has taken aim at the “big housing bureaucracy” created by the Albanese government and the “desperate” bid to create more homes.
Just last month, Housing Minister Clare O’Neil defended her 1.2 million housing target despite warnings that every key metric is failing and advice from Treasury that the goal will fail.
The National Housing Accord, which began in July 2024, aims to deliver the 1.2 million new homes by 2029 - but Treasury has warned the target “will not be met” in advice that was accidentally leaked in a freedom of information request .
The government could fall more than 200,000 homes behind that target by 2029, with some forecasts predicting it will fall short by as much as 250,000 .
