CORALVILLE — The Iowa volleyball program opened Big Ten play with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 28-26) sweep of Maryland on Thursday night.

The Hawkeyes (10-3, 1-0 Big Ten) managed a late rally in the third set to earn the sweep with a come-from-behind victory after a little extra volleyball.

Out of substitutions and defensive specialist Allison Berent in the front row, Iowa managed the thrilling win as junior middle hitter Hannah Whittingstall knocked down the match-clinching kill.

“The last point, we were just laughing about it because, obviously, you have a DS in the front and Gia (McGrew) went back row, which she’s never done before,” Whittingstall said. “In that moment, it was really cool to see us all pull together and just trust in each other and stay calm and finish it out strong.”
