One of Australia's most popular train lines has celebrated 170 years with a unique experience transporting commuters back in time.
The original 22-kilometre trip from Sydney to Parramatta was retraced by passengers on Friday, who boarded three commemorative trains to mark the day NSW launched its first passenger railway line.
The trains ran side-by-side at the exact date and time the tracks first opened.
Back when the line launched in 1855, it took passengers about 50 minutes to make the full journey.
The trip included four stops at stations in Newtown, Ashfield, Burwood and Homebush.
Opening day was a massive public event, with onlookers flooding the streets to get a glimpse of the locomotive replacing the horse-drawn carts of the day.
