Authorities are on alert over a fresh outage that could block desperate calls to emergency services from landlines.

A suspected hardware fault is to blame for the NBN issue currently affecting more than 700 customers in the Goldfields-Esperance region of WA .

“This may impact the ability to make phone calls, including emergency Triple-0 calls from NBN landline services,” WA Police said.

Bandy Creek, Castletown, Chadwick, Esperance and West Beach are the locations caught up in the outage, which started just after 9.30am local time on Friday.

NBN Co does not know when the issue will be resolved, with technicians only set to arrive at about 7pm.
