ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A special-called meeting was held over the controversy of how Jonesboro Mayor Donya Sartor funded the city’s Juneteenth celebration this year.
The concerns were brought by the organization S.A.F.E., which is a non-profit watchdog group that aims to hold elected officials accountable for government spending.
The group claims Sartor violated her position as mayor when she spent over $50,000 of the Downtown Development Authority’s money for the city’s Juneteenth celebration.
However, Mayor Sartor said she partnered with the DDA for the Juneteenth celebration in order not to have to ask the city council for permission to raise the spending limit.
Sartor said she deposited the sponsor money that was raised, which was $40,000, into the DDA’s account.
