The calendar may say fall, but the weather is telling a different story. Instead of crisp autumn air, Westman welcomed the first day of the new season with a high of 27 degrees (27.8 degrees in Portage), more than 10 degrees above the long-term average.

Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, explains that the daily high for the fall equinox typically sits around 16 degrees, though temperatures can swing higher or lower. While it’s not unheard of to see hot days around this time of year, it’s far from the norm.

“At this time last year, we were in the high teens, but in 2020, Winnipeg actually hit 30 degrees on September 22, so you can still get quite warm temperatures,” she notes.
