While not all governments impose a wheel tax, those that do may base them on factors such as a vehicle's weight or wheel count. They are applied during annual registration or renewal.
In Tennessee, Lake County imposes the highest passenger vehicle wheel tax at $100 per year, while Pickett County levies the lowest at just $10 — excluding the numerous counties across the state that don’t charge a wheel tax at all, according to University of Tennessee's County Technical Assistance Service. In Nashville and Davidson County, a $55 fee is added to passenger vehicle registration fees each year.
