New Delhi: Police arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday, a day after Centre cancelled the FCRA licence of Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) founded by him.

Wangchuk, the 2018 Ramon Magsaysay Award winner, also did not attend the press conference that was scheduled to take place at 2.30pm on Friday.

What authorities said on Wangchuk’s arrest?

Wangchuk was taken into custody by a police team led aby Ladakh DGP SD Singh Jamwal at around 2.30 pm, an official said. It was not immediately clear about the charges pressed against Wangchuk.

Meanwhile, an uneasy calm prevailed in Ladakh as police and paramilitary forces enforced a curfew in Leh town, two days after protests for statehood turned violent leaving four people dead and 90 others injured.
