Postal workers across the country are on strike after the federal government announced an end to door-to-door mail delivery.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) confirmed Thursday that 55,000 employees are walking off the job. The strike follows Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound’s announcement of sweeping changes to Canada Post, aimed at cutting costs at the struggling Crown corporation.

On its website, the union described the move as “an attack on our postal service and workers.” CUPW president Jan Simpson said the union was not given advance notice of the government’s decision.
