NEEDHAM, Mass. —
A tropical wave over the Caribbean will likely develop into the next named tropical system, and forecast models are beginning to come into agreement that the system may move into the Carolinas with flooding rains possible.
"The system will likely become 'Imelda,' our next name on the list. Residents in the Southeast, especially in South Carolina and eastern North Carolina, should closely monitor the forecast this weekend," StormTeam 5 chief meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon said.
While the storm may not directly be a factor along the Carolina Coast until later Monday, heavy rain from a phenomenon called a predecessor rain event will likely fall across a large swath of the Carolinas over the weekend.
Over 3 inches of rain may fall in some areas before the system's actual a
