BOSTON (WWLP) - Homeowners across Massachusetts are increasingly applying to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs) following the implementation of Governor Maura Healey's Affordable Homes Act, which allows these units to be constructed by-right on single-family properties.
In the first half of 2025, over 550 ADU applications have been approved out of 844 submitted in 170 communities, according to a survey by the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities. This surge in applications highlights the growing interest in ADUs as a strategy to increase affordable housing and provide additional income for homeowners.
