In a bid to potentially prevent disruptive mid-year layoffs , negotiators for the unions representing teachers and support staff at the Reynolds School District on Thursday proposed lopping off the last two days of the school year to save an estimated $1.1 million.

Officials at Multnomah County’s third largest school district have said that’s not enough to make up for a $5.5 million hole in their budget . They have asked employees to agree to 10 days without pay, including four paid holidays and six instructional days, a proposal that union members soundly rejected earlier this month by a 3-to-1 margin.
