At Langley Hospice residence, the clip-clop of hooves has become a familiar and welcome sound. Every few weeks, a small but mighty volunteer named Miss Vickie arrives to brighten the day of residents and their families.

At 24 years old, the miniature horse is winning hearts with her gentle nature, calm presence, and ability to spark joy in even the quietest moments.

Miss Vickie belongs to Langley Township resident Jill Spavor, a retired registered nurse who began volunteering at Langley Hospice three years ago.

After a decades-long career in healthcare, Spavor wanted to continue supporting people in a way that wasn’t clinical.

“I’ve always been interested in palliative care during my 35 years of nursing,” she explained.

Spavor saw a unique opportunity to bring something more.
