It's been one year since Hurricane Helene tore through western North Carolina, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

The devastating storm made landfall last September in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane before sweeping through multiple states.

Some of the mountain towns in North Carolina have made progress, but recovery has been slow in other parts.

In Swannanoa, North Carolina, piles of debris still mark the storm's path.

"Every day we have people calling that are struggling economically," Amy Cantrell with Beloved Asheville said about the recovery in Swannanoa. Recovery in the area has been slower than in communities like nearby Asheville, which has more resources.
