In many of India’s remotest villages, a teacher might be a homemaker in Coimbatore, a college student in Delhi, or even a scientist working at NASA. They all meet in a small digital classroom, powered by eVidyaloka — a Bengaluru-based non-profit that has just won businessline’s Changemaker Award in the Chairperson’s Award category.

What began as an experiment in a single village in Tamil Nadu has today grown into a movement across 952 schools in 17 States, teaching in 10 Indian languages, and impacting more than 6.43 lakh children. Its model uses digital classrooms to bridge the chronic shortage of teachers in rural areas, matching children’s needs with a 70,000-strong volunteer base spread across the world.
