PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Providence Place mall officials are looking for a new movie-theater operator after learning Showcase Cinemas will not renew its lease in January.

Showcase, a subsidiary of National Amusements Inc., has long been operating the theater that originally opened with 16 screens and Imax in 2000.

Mark Russo, the attorney who is running the mall in receivership, revealed in court documents he'd learned National Amusements doesn't intend to renew its lease that expires on Jan. 31. As a result, he's asked a judge to allow him to end the lease early, purchase the equipment at market value and seek a replacement for Cinemas.

Providence Business News first reported the mall was seeking a replacement.
