Guardians designated hitter George Valera (35) celebrates his two-run home run in the third inning against the Tigers at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Sept. 24, 2025.

The Detroit Tigers' stunning collapse opened the door for the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central and the two teams enter the final weekend fighting for the division title as well as an AL wild card spot.

Cleveland trailed the Tigers by 11 games on Sept. 4 but made up that deficit over their next 18, reeling off a 10-game winning streak as Detroit stumbled. If the teams finish tied atop the AL Central, the Guardians hold the tiebreaker and would win the division by virtue of going 8-5 against the Tigers this season.

The runner-up still can still get into the playoffs via the AL's final wild card spot, with the Houston Astros still in contention after the Boston Red Sox clinched a postseason berth with a 4-3 walk-off win over the Tigers at Fenway Park on Friday.
