The New Orleans City Council unanimously approved legislation that would expand local safety alerts for missing people.

The motion, approved by the council Thursday, directs the New Orleans Police Department to establish a new alert system designed to locate missing vulnerable children and adults.

Council member Helena Moreno brought forth the motion, saying that Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts have strict guidelines that leave many at-risk people without coverage.

The new program's goal would be to create a new local alert program to close those gaps for people reported missing in New Orleans.

The alerts will be issued through the city’s NOLA Ready platform or a comparable operating
