LEXINGTON, Neb. (KNOP) - A traffic stop on I-80 near Lexington led to the discovery of two pounds of heroin and the arrest of two people.

Maribel Medina-DeQuinonez, 56, and Jose Cabrera-Mendez, 35, both of Bridgeport, Connecticut, were arraigned in Dawson County Court on Tuesday on suspicion of possession of 140 grams or more of heroin with intent to distribute and no drug tax stamp.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a trooper stopped a 2020 Toyota C-HR XLE for following another vehicle too closely around 3 p.m. Monday.

The trooper became suspicious of criminal activity and initiated a consent search of the SUV reportedly driven by Cabrera-Mendez.

A search of the vehicle found a package of just over two pounds of suspected heroin under the rear seat, according to NSP.
