SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A district court judge is expected to make a decision in the trial of South Kingstown Town Councilman Jay Wegimont on Oct. 8.
Wegimont, 34, faces a misdemeanor assault charge after an incident involving Narragansett GOP Chairman Anthony D'Ellena in June.
The prosecution and defense rested their cases Thursday.
During the first day of the bench trial on Wednesday, D'Ellena testified that Wegimont made physical contact with him twice during their encounter, while the defense argued his accusations are an attempt to get Wegimont removed from the council and replaced by a Republican.
D'Ellena said their interaction stemmed from Wegimont being unhappy with posts he had made about the councilman's past DUI arrests.
