CANTON, Ohio (WOIO) - A Canton church claims they were scammed out of nearly $10,000 thinking they were paying their electric bill.

In a police report filed Wednesday, Deliverance Christian Church said their American Electric Power bill was “higher than normal,” and AEP had scheduled a disconnect electricity date.

On Monday, a church member received a call from someone claiming to be from AEP stating their was technician enroute to shut off the utility, and could not take a payment over the phone.

Then, another church member received a call from someone claiming to be from AEP, and was reportedly given a number to call give a code to send the payment to.

According to the incident report, a church member then went to Walmart and sent a money order for $9,800 to the phone number and code
