Terrifying remarks from one of Vladimir Putin's most trusted confidants have sparked alarm worldwide this week, after the senior official spoke about potentially deploying "the most terrible weapons" against Britain.

Sergei Karaganov, the honorary chairman of the Russian Council for Foreign and Defence Policy who is frequently dubbed 'Professor Doomsday', recently outlined his thoughts on "breaking the back of Europe".

Speaking on Russian state television, the 73 year old declared: "This European contagion must be eradicated. We need to prepare to strike, or at least make them understand that we are ready. It won't necessarily be a nuclear strike... but we must prepare."
