CHELSEA, Maine — Despite uncertainty and the risk of federal funding cuts, a Maine nonprofit is still committed to ending homelessness for all veterans in the state.

For 15 years, Volunteers of America Northern New England has provided transitional housing, mental health services, and support to hundreds of Mainers who have served the country.

With the need for stable housing on the rise, the nonprofit is asking the public to help veterans rebuild their lives.

Ernie Gagnon served as a combat engineer in the Army during the Vietnam War.

After returning to Maine, he faced addiction and PTSD. At one point, the Augusta native lived in his car in a Walmart parking lot. That was when he found what would become his "forever" home.
