MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Some residents showing up at their usual polling place to vote in the runoffs Tuesday experienced confusion and frustration. That's because they were told they were "inactive," despite having voted in the general election on Aug. 26.
Officials with the City of Mobile initiated an investigation into the matter, News 5 has learned. They discovered that 37,000 voters in Mobile County were marked as inactive due to a federal Motor Voter Act audit that flagged approximately 400,000 voters statewide.
All of the voters marked as inactive received a letter in the mail, giving them 90 days to confirm that they still live where they are registered to vote.
