Brisbane skipper Lachie Neale is set to start as the sub for the Brisbane Lions in today's AFL grand final.

Neale, who injured his calf against the Cats in the qualifying final, was long odds to get up for the clash against Geelong at the MCG, but was a shock addition to the squad when teams were announced on Thursday .

Bruce Reville, who was expected to be the sub, will now most likely start the game for the Lions.

Neale has played just one game since early August after overcoming a quad strain to play in the qualifying final against the Cats three weeks ago, before injuring his calf.

Experts predicted it would be a four-to-six-week injury, but Neale trained well this week and came into the team for the injured Jarrod Berry.
