MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has announced that National Guard troops will arrive in Memphis starting next week.
"The story of crime in Memphis is about to be a story of the past," Lee said during a press conference Friday, Sept. 26.
Lee said that agencies will begin arriving on Monday. Lee said the deployment will be a "phased approach" that will last over the next several weeks and months.
The governor said that 13 agencies will be involved in the operation, including the FBI , DEA, and ATF.
He said the operation will be "mission-dependent" and that the number of troops will be based on need. The governor said that troops will not be armed or make arrests at the beginning, but that could change depending on need.
