NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The city of Newport is apologizing after a community mural was accidentally painted over earlier this week.

The mural was being painted on the side of the pump station house off Hillside Avenue and was just weeks away from completion, according to the city.

"Please know that it was an honest mistake and in no way was in response to any complaints that were received," the city explained in a social media post Friday afternoon. "In fact, our staff was originally dispatched to the building in order to prepare it for the mural's final touches."

Specifically, the city asked the workers to "freshen up the blue background," since there were bare spots, chipped paint and splatter that needed to be addressed.
