Officials at Gettysburg National Military Park are asking the public for help after a stone containing a dinosaur fossil was vandalized this week.
Around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, maintenance staff found a large capstone missing from the South Confederate Avenue Bridge, over Plum Run. The bridge is commonly referred to as the “Dinosaur Bridge.”
The capstone was later found below the bridge along Plum Run.
Officials believe a heavy object was used to strike the stone and pry it free, causing it to fall in an attemp to steal the 30-inch capstone.
The fossil, a track of an Anchisauripus that lived during the Jurassic period between 145 million and 201 million years ago, was unharmed.
Anyone with information regarding the vandalized capstone is asked to send an email to GETT_Superintendent@nps.
