HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Mililani man who was found guilty in the brutal killing of his mother and her dog reached a deal with the state regarding his sentencing.

Jamil Hart, 39, was convicted by an Oahu jury Monday of murder in the second degree for the death of Gwendolyn Hara-Hart.

He was also found guilty of attempted burglary and cruelty to animals.

Hart was in court Thursday, Sept. 25, for the extended sentencing portion of his trial.

Murder in the second degree carries a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

However, because Hart is a multiple offender and the victim was over the age of 60, he could have faced a potential sentence of life without parole for the murder charge, as well as a 20-year sentence for the attempted burglary charge, and 10 years
