SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Sacramento Congresswoman Doris Matsui joined the American Civil Liberties Union on Friday to introduce legislation with the goal of bolstering the First Amendment.

The Broadcast Freedom and Independence Act aims to prevent instances like the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel and efforts to defund public media.

Matsui, a Democrat, said the bill would ensure that the federal government cannot revoke licenses or punish broadcasters due to the viewpoints they air.

"The federal government, we want to make it clear, cannot revoke licenses or punish broadcasters, simply because of the viewpoints that they air," Matsui said. "You know, this is not about Democrats or Republicans. It's about if we as a nation still believe in the promise, the promise of the First Amendment."
