FARMINGDALE, N.Y. —

Fans draped in red, white and blue flooded into Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, as the Ryder Cup kicked off for the first time at the famous Long Island golf course.

Day one of the Ryder Cup began with a team of 12 from the United States taking on a team of 12 from Europe in match play.

Two of the golfers playing in this year's Ryder Cup have strong ties to Alabama.

Justin Thomas, on the U.S. team, played at Alabama and teamed up with Cameron Young on Friday.

Sepp Straka is playing for the Europeans, and he and his family live in Vestavia Hills. He was paired up with Jon Rahm on Friday morning. This is Straka's second Ryder Cup.
