Tensions were heightened outside the Immigration and Custom Enforcement processing facility in suburban Broadview on Friday, where, at one point, reports emerged of pepper balls being deployed during clashes.
For the most part, a newly installed metal fence kept protestors and agents separated. The fencing around the facility was erected this week after a series of high-profile clashes between protesters and ICE agents . However, the city has called for the fence's removal, saying it's a fire hazard.
The Department of Homeland Security said some protesters outside the facility assaulted law enforcement and were interfering with operations. As nightfall arrived, ICE agents watched from the roofline while the large crowd below chanted and federal vehicles passed by.
