According to sacred texts, Maa Katyayani was born to sage Katyayan, following his intense penance to the divine mother. As a result, she came to be known as Katyayani. She is also closely associated with the slaying of the demon Mahishasura, a battle in which her fierce energy safeguarded the cosmos.
