BOSTON — Trevor Story was the first guy to greet Romy Gonzalez at home plate, and led the pack to celebrate with Ceddanne Rafaela at third.

The Red Sox walk-off 4-3 win over the Tigers on Friday night at Fenway Park put Boston in the postseason for the first time since 2021.

It’s been longer than that for Story and his road has been tougher than most. So he appreciated the chance to celebrate a little bit more.

Pennant races... sold out Fenway Park ... the playoffs... This was what Story thought he was getting when he signed a 6-year, $140 million contract with the Red Sox in 2022. He thought about it a lot.

Instead, his first three seasons were decimated by injuries. He played just 94 games in 2022, 43 games in 2023, 26 games last year and 0 games in the playoffs.
