STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Staten Island Council delegation has taken a significant step forward in restoring the Britton Cottage at Historic Richmond Town, with plans to open the 354-year-old structure to the public for the first time since 1967.
Built in 1670, the cottage originally stood at the foot of present-day New Dorp Lane, near Cedar Grove Avenue. It was moved to Historic Richmond Town in 1965, and is now located on the north side of Richmond Road at the foot of Court Place.
Councilmember David M. Carr, a Republican representing the Mid-Island, announced more than $2.1 million in funding for the cottage’s restoration, which was included in the most recent New York City Council budget adoption.
