Internet services were suspended for 48 hours in Bareilly following the arrest of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, a local cleric and president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, on Saturday. His call for a protest in support of the 'I Love Muhammad' campaign led to a violent clash with police after Friday prayers. The district administration said the shutdown was aimed at preventing the spread of rumours.

Meanwhile, the state government described the violence as a conspiracy to disturb peace, while opposition leaders criticised the police action. The BJP instructed its leaders to refrain from making public statements on the issue.
