During the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called on BRICS nations to defend the multilateral trading system against rising protectionism and tariff volatility. Speaking at a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers in New York, he emphasized, "When multilateralism is under stress, BRICS has stood firm as a strong voice of reason and constructive change."

Jaishankar highlighted the challenges posed by increasing tariffs and non-tariff barriers that threaten global trade flows. He noted that the United States has imposed significant tariffs on India and Brazil, which has heightened concerns among BRICS members. He stated, "As rising protectionism, tariff volatility and non-tariff barriers impact trade flows, BRICS must defend the multilateral trading system."

The minister also urged BRICS to amplify calls for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council. He remarked, "In a turbulent world, BRICS must reinforce the message of peacebuilding, dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to international law."

Jaishankar's remarks come as India prepares to chair BRICS in 2026, where he plans to focus on food and energy security, climate change, and sustainable development through innovation and digital transformation. He also participated in discussions with various foreign ministers, including those from Brazil, South Africa, and Russia, addressing issues ranging from bilateral ties to global geopolitical challenges.

In a related meeting, the IBSA group, comprising India, Brazil, and South Africa, condemned the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza and called for urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis. Jaishankar's engagements at the UNGA reflect India's commitment to strengthening global partnerships and advocating for the interests of the Global South.
