FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Team Europe accomplished something Saturday morning never done before in the history of the Ryder Cup.
No road team had ever won the first three sessions of the biennial bout since Continental Europe became a team in 1979. Team Europe accomplished that after its foursomes win Saturday morning.
The Europeans won Friday foursomes 3-1 before taking Friday four-ball 2½-1½. Then on Saturday, it was another dominant showing in foursomes, winning 3-1 and clinching a bit of Ryder Cup history.
With two sessions and 16 points remaining, the Europeans only need 5½ more points at Bethpage Black to retain the Ryder Cup. For the Americans, the event is not over, trailing 8½-3½ heading into Saturday four-ball, but the hill to climb is perhaps more steep than it ever has been at home.
This is the best start from the Europeans ever in an away Ryder Cup. Coming off a dominant performance in Rome and with 11 of 12 players back, many expected the Euros to be strong. But they have flat-out dominated the United States at Bethpage Black this week.
It's only Saturday afternoon, but the 45th Ryder Cup is all but in the books. And for the U.S., the questions and grumbling grows even louder as the Europeans move closer to winning for the 11th time in the last 15 contests.
