Makena White, a 28-year-old graduate of McMaster University and partner of PGA golfer Jake Knapp, passed away on September 22. Her death was confirmed on September 26 through a post on her Instagram account by a friend. The message expressed that she was “already so deeply missed by her Dad, her family, her friends, and of course by Nelly and Fergie,” her two dogs. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.
White was known for her adventurous spirit and vibrant energy. She grew up in Ottawa, where she played hockey for the Nepean Wildcats and graduated from St. Joseph High School. At McMaster, she earned degrees in communications and software engineering. Following her education, she began her career in sales before transitioning to the health sector, driven by her desire to help others.
Jake Knapp, who recently won the Mexico Open in February 2024, described the loss as “a tough reality to comprehend.” He praised White as “a thoughtful person whose selflessness toward others is something I will always appreciate.”
Friends and family remembered White for her active lifestyle and commitment to making a difference. She volunteered at an orphanage in Uganda and was known for her love of travel, often planning trips. Her obituary noted, “To be loved by Makena was a gift, one that brought endless laughter, so much joy and a healthy dose of chaos.”
White's mother passed away in 2022 after receiving treatment at Ottawa’s Bruyère Brain Health and Memory Clinic, where her father serves on the board.
A celebration of Makena White’s life is scheduled for October 2 at Beechwood Funeral Home in Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested donations to the Bruyère Brain Health and Memory Clinic or the Griffin Bell Endowment Fund.
