In a typical year, San Francisco adds somewhere between five and 10 historic buildings to its list of officially designated local landmarks .
In the coming weeks, though, city supervisors could approve a batch of 16 landmark proposals in one fell swoop. And this batch — made up of historic buildings in District 8 — could be just the first of many.
This expedited “batch landmarking” approach to historic preservation has been embraced by some city leaders in response to Mayor Daniel Lurie’s “family zoning” plan to increase housing density across much of The City’s western and northern neighborhoods.
